"Dancing at Lughnasa", an award-winning play by Brian Friel, explores the themes of family, identity, and how the past shapes our lives. It tells the story of a turning-point summer in the lives of the five unmarried, impoverished Mundy sisters, who live together in an rural town in 1930s Ireland. It is during this summer that their fragile lives are upset by the return of two men: Jack, their oldest brother, and Gerry, the father of the youngest sister's illegitimate child. "Dancing at Lughnasa" is a haunting tale of a family struggling to survive together, liberated only by love, music, and dance.
