FIRST PERSON SINGULAR'S ON BOOK: Women on the Stoop: Elizabeth Rosner reads Grace Paley

Featuring three short stories by acclaimed writer-activist Grace Paley, Women on the Stoop will depict women enduring life's disappointments while they struggle to remain engaged with society, politics, and family. Paley's characters were informed mothers and wives - domestic feminists who anticipated the women's movement of the 1960s. Though educated and outspoken, they came of age when women married young, stayed home, and grew accustomed to limited horizons. Liberation would belong to the generation that followed, but as consciences of the neighborhood, these women had purpose, and made their voices heard. Herself a writer of strong and graceful prose, Elizabeth Rosner (The Speed of Light; Blue Nude) will inhabit Paley's unique poetic vernacular, and show what happens when a voice so alive on the page strikes the air.

With an improvised live piano score by Richard Leiter.

Women on the Stoop is the premiere of First Person Singular's new reading series, On Book. Featuring prominent local writers interpreting the work of literary kin, On Book will demonstrate how the breath of one voice can inspire another.
