Huichol Artist: Luciano Valdez

Luciano brings yarn paintings and beadwork made by his family and other members of the Huichol village where he lives. Each painting, beaded bowl, and beaded animal is full of protective and/or healing symbols from their culture. Made by pressing a very thin layer of tree resin and beeswax over wood or gourd, then pressing the yarn or beads in to this soft mixture, each piece is visually stunning.

The Huichol live in the Sierra Madre mountains in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit in Mexico. The village that Luciano lives in is very remote without running water or electricity. To come here, he walks for a couple of days out of the very steep mountains, then takes a bus for 6 days and 5 nights. He has been showing at Gathering Tribes for over 14 years.

All proceeds from the sale of the items Luciano brings goes directly to the Huichol people.
