Originally written as an allegory for the blacklisting of communists in the U.S. during the McCarthy trials, the revolutionary The Crucible is a dramatization of the Salem Witch Trials during 1692. A Puritan town explodes in crazed fear and confusion as townspeople are accused, one after another, of witchcraft. Confess and stay alive; dare to defy authority by insisting your innocence and be executed. Deflect by pointing fingers at another. Tense dialogue and an ominous overtone pack a powerful and timeless message of intolerance and hysteria.
