Downtown Berkeley BART Station Reopen Following Fatality

Trains were delayed last night following the incident.

The Downtown Berkeley BART station has reopened about three hours after a person died after reportedly being under a train, BART officials said. A BART dispatcher said a report of a person under a train at the station came in around 6:35 p.m.

The station is located at 2160 Shattuck Ave. and was closed at about 6:50 p.m., according to the dispatcher. BART police, fire crews, medical personnel and Alameda County coroner’s bureau responded to the scene, BART officials said.

At about 7:15 p.m., a BART police watch commander confirmed that the person was deceased, according to BART officials. Trains did not stop at the Downtown Berkeley station and single-tracked through the station during the closure, the dispatcher said. The station reopened at about 10:10 p.m., according to BART officials. Normal service has since been restored to the Richmond line in the Fremont direction though passengers have been advised to expect residual delays, BART officials said.

Trains will not be stopping at the Downtown Berkeley station and will be single-tracking through the station, the dispatcher said. Passengers have been advised to expect major delays on the Richmond line in the Richmond, Millbrae and Fremont directions, according to the dispatcher.
