Five Armed Robberies Near Campus

All robbers were armed with guns, or implied they were. (Breaking)

BERKELEY, CA — Four armed robberies and one robbery via simulated firearm took place near the University of California at Berkeley campus on Sunday, campus police said.

Just before 1 a.m., two black men at College Avenue and Derby Street displayed a gun and demanded a victim's property. The victim complied, and the two men ran north on College Avenue without harming the victim.

City and campus police have not located the two men.

At 3:10 a.m., three or four black men in their early 20s approached a male victim talking on his cellphone near 2607 Ellsworth St.

The victim walked inside an apartment security guard, but the suspects followed him, police said. One of the men pretended to have a gun in his waistband, demanding the victim's cellphone.

The victim complied and the suspects ran off without harming him.

The suspects are described as being 5 foot 8 to 5 foot 10 inches tall, with medium builds and wearing dark clothing.


At about 10:45 p.m., a black man wearing a black or gray mask and black clothing approached a victim from a hidden driveway at LeConte and LeRoy avenues.

The man displayed a gun and demanded the victim's property. The victim complied and the suspect ran east on LeConte Avenue without harming the victim. The suspect remains at large.

Just after 11 p.m., a Hispanic man appearing about 25 years old stepped out from a hidden driveway to confront a victim who was walking at LeConte and LeRoy avenues.

The man showed the victim a gun and demanded the victim's property. The victim complied, and the suspect ran south on LeRoy Avenue without hurting the victim.

The suspect is still at large. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and gray pants, police said.

A fifth armed robbery took place near campus on Thursday. At 11:30 p.m., a man grabbed a female victim's backpack, displayed a gun, and demanded her property at Arch Street and Hilgard Avenue.

The victim was unharmed. Police say the suspect committed another robbery the same night and was arrested. He was identified as 18-year-old Charles Anderson. Anyone with information about any of these incidents has been asked to call the Berkeley police at (510) 981-5900.
