The St. Mary's College High football team was the recipient of several gifts from Kennedy on Saturday.
The Panthers took advantage of four fumbles and four interceptions to take down the Eagles 30-6 at George Anthony Harris Track and Field in Richmond.
"A lot of them were unforced. We hustle. They aren't really experienced," St. Mary's coach Keith Minor said. "They're great athletes. With some time they're going to be some great football players. The one thing about football is you got to hold onto the ball."
Kennedy had four turnovers in each half, but an interception before halftime hurt the Eagles the most.
On a third-and-14 from the Panthers' 44, Kennedy quarterback Troy Anderson was intercepted by St. Mary's defensive back Ethan Weinstein, who returned it 68 yards for a touchdown with one minute, 17 seconds left in the second quarter. That pushed the Panthers' lead to 22-6 at halftime.
Weinstein would pick off another pass in the second half, but his first pick made it a two-possession lead.
Not bad for a player who considers football his second sport.
"The guy thinks he's a basketball player," Minor said. "We had to convince him to come out (for the team), and every day he's coming out and becoming a very, very good football player. If he plays the field as good as he plays basketball, he's going to be all right."
Chance Moses led the team from the backfield, rushing 17 times for 76 yards one touchdown. He found a gap in the left side in the first quarter and pushed 24 yards to the end zone to give St. Mary's an early 8-0 lead.
Kennedy would respond on the first play of the second quarter. On fourth-and-14 from the Panthers' 25, Anderson would find Blake Elliott down the right sideline for a score that tightened the gap to 8-6.
Midway through the second quarter, Caleb Coleman picked off an Anderson pass at the Panthers' 43 and ran it back to the Eagles' 37. St. Mary's took advantage almost instantly.
On their first play following the turnover, quarterback Kevin Flemer tossed a 37-yard pass to Chris Carnegie that made it a 14-6 advantage. Flemer would finish with 77 yards passing but threw for two scores.
The Panthers move into a four-way tie for second in the Bay Shore Athletic League standings with St. Patrick/St. Vincent's, Piedmont and Moreau Catholic at 2-1. Encinal is in first at 3-0.
St. Mary's plays Piedmont next week, in a matchup that could put the winner in a good position to claim a playoff spot, and put the loser in a hole with just three games to play. Both teams are taking two-game win streaks into the contest.
"We got to handle our business. We just got to worry about ourselves," Minor said.
