Returning to the Bone Room Presents after his successful book, "The Empire of Death" Paul Koudounaris has again captured images of never before seen, exotically dressed medieval skeletons in his new book, "Heavenly Bodies: Cult Treasures & Spectacular Saints from the Catacombs". Discovered in 1578 in Rome, a new labyrinth of underground tombs was discovered containing thousands of "catacomb saints", so richly dressed as to dazzle the eyes of even the irreligious. Start with a fully articulated female skeleton, probably a saint, clothed in a startling dress overlaid with silk and lace, adorned with semiprecious stones. Heavenly bodies indeed.
