📰 News we're reading
• New California Law Aims to Stop 'Predatory' Developers from Moving In on Wildfire-Ravaged Community (insideclimatenews.org) — Altadena residents are now covered by a new state law that temporarily limits dense, developer-driven rebuilding in neighborhoods devastated by the Eaton Fire, while carving out room for local land trusts to add affordable housing. Survivors describe slow recovery, rising developer pressure, and fears of displacement, as officials, advocates and neighbors debate how to balance wildfire recovery, housing needs, and Altadena's historic character.

• Ground Broken on Reimagined Charles White Park (pasadenanow.com) — Work is officially underway to transform Charles White Park in West Altadena into a more active community hub with a new recreation center, splash pad, pickleball courts, and a Disney-designed playground. Local, state and federal leaders say the project, boosted by a $5 million Disney contribution, is part of helping Altadena heal and reconnect after the devastating 2025 fire that damaged homes and gathering places.

• Beyond Defensible Space: What the Eaton Fire Revealed About Community Wildfire Risk (coloradoboulevard.net) — A new state-commissioned analysis of the Eaton Fire concludes that Altadena's wildfire risk depends less on individual brush clearing and more on how entire neighborhoods, roads, utilities, and evacuation systems perform together. The report urges Altadena officials and residents to plan for fast-moving, wind-driven urban fires by hardening homes, protecting key routes, improving alerts, and strengthening water, power, and communication systems before the next major event.
