• Cassidy Kelsay dies in hit-and-run crash on State Highway 18 (newsline.com) — A 41-year-old Apple Valley man, Cassidy Kelsay, died after being struck by a vehicle on State Highway 18 in Apple Valley early August 28, with the driver fleeing the scene. Authorities say no suspect vehicle description is yet available, while Kelsay's family has launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses and seek accountability. 
• Free Apple Valley vision screening serves 137 community members (vvdailypress.com) — Apple Valley residents recently packed a free vision screening at the AVUSD Educational Support Center, where 137 people received eye health consultations and 100 went home with free recycled glasses. Organized by Apple Valley Unified and the Apple Valley Sunrise Lions, the event especially helped local youth overcome cost barriers to basic vision care, with volunteers from Apple Valley High School pitching in.
