39 Teachers, Counselors To Learn Fate of Jobs Today

Dozens of certified employees from the Beaumont Unified School District will find out if they will be laid off after a special board meeting tonight.

UPDATE: The board of trustees has passed the resolution to lay off the teachers.  Original story as follows.

A special board of trustees meeting by the Beaumont Unified School District will decide the fates of dozens of teachers and counselors tonight.

The board, which meets at 5:30 p.m., will first hear public comments on the issue before heading into a closed session to vote on the layoff resolution.

The positions initially included the equivalent to approximately  who were all notified in early March that their jobs were in jeopardy, having received "pink slips," or precautionary layoff notices, according to district Personnel Manager Maggie Racadio.

The resolution attached to tonight's board meeting agenda includes a final layoff list of 39 employees, the majority of whom are full time.

Cecila Rodriguez Tiffany Holmes Snijina Nedeltchev Danielle Nicklaus Shari Broadway-McCracken Kristen Turley Bradley Vargyas Marianne Lithyouvong Rachelle Herlihy Monica Mayer Amy Franklin Kelly Norris Hilary Larson Danielle Crayne Erika Rivera Katie Hollingworth Laci Dill Rebekah Cowen Sharisa Lymon Mathew McIntosh Brian Olufson Cesar Lopez Lisa Tiernan Gregory Hammond Jennifer Martin Meghan Lusk Michael Williams Oscar De la Cruz Alyssa Espalin Kathryn Myrdahl Elizabeth Newmeyer Genelle Kenyon Tammie Medlen Debbie Walker Nicole Simmons Yolanda Lopez Lynda McGill Kuuipo Benson Rita Alexander

The deadline for the district to let those employees know if they will receive final layoff notices is by Tuesday, May 15, Racadio said.

Since the initial notices were mailed out, unions representing the teachers and classified employees, who are also at risk of dozens of layoffs, have been in talks with the district to try to save as many jobs as possible, through concessions.

"We're really, really close," Racadio said earlier this week when talking about how the talks were coming.  "I have a strong feeling we'll be bringing almost all [the positions] back."

The Beaumont Unified School District board of trustees is scheduled to meet at 500 Grace Ave., Beaumont.
