The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is continuing construction on Interstate 10 (I-10) in preparation of a crossover lane. The I-10 Tune Up will replace damaged concrete slabs, repave the interstate, upgrade the center median and guardrail system, and upgrade various on and off ramps through the area.
To assist in completing the project without reducing lanes during the day, crews are building a temporary “crossover lane” in the center median in Segment 2, from 8th St in Banning to Main St in Cabazon. A crossover lane creates a workspace by shifting one lane of traffic to this temporary lane using k-rail. The crossover lane traffic pattern will change, along with narrower 11-foot wide lanes. The first 5-mile segment crossover is anticipated to be in place beginning July 27, 2020 with motorist utilizing the lane by July 29 or 30. Once commuters enter this crossover, you will be unable to exit until the very end. Semi’s, vehicles towing trailers and RV’s are prohibited from entering the crossover.

During daytime work, Caltrans plans to have four lanes open in each direction and work will take place behind k-rail. Nighttime work will require lane and ramp closures which could be down to one lane. The speed limit is reduced to 60 MPH in the work zone for motorist and worker safety. Semi’s, vehicles towing trailers and RV’s speed limit remains 55 MPH.
