Major Earthquake Shakes Riverside County, SoCal

Multiple aftershocks rattle area.

CABAZON, CA — A major earthquake rolled through the Southern California area early Tuesday morning waking residents from their beds, followed by multiple aftershocks. The preliminary magnitude of the 4:49 a.m. quake was reported as 4.6. However, it was downgraded shortly later to a 4.5-magnitude temblor, data shows.

The quake was located near Cabazon, centered at a depth of approximately 8.6 miles below the earth's surface, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

  • 6.8 mi N of Cabazon
  • 8.1 mi NE of Banning
  • 11.8 mi W of Morongo Valley
  • 19.9 mi NW of Palm Springs
  • 26.1 mi ENE Moreno Valley
  • 30.4 mi ESESan Bernardino
  • 62.1 mi SSE Barstow

Shortly after the 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck, a 3.2-magnitude earthquake rolled through the region, according to the U.S.G.S.

The large quake was felt locally throughout the Banning Pass and Riverside County — and as far away as Orange, San Diego and Los Angeles counties. This shaker comes on the heels of a large quake that rattled Los Angeles County at the beginning of April.
