Cinco de Mayo - No, It Is Not Mexican Indpendence Day - But it is for the NBA League ~ Yes We Take Offense at Donald Sterling - This maybe a stretch, but follow me here, my train of thought.
We take pride in our acceptance of all ethnicities, and last week I believe was an opportunity to take a second look at our diversities in this country, someone gave us an unwanted opportunity - Donald Sterling brought to the forefront an unwanted gift in disguise. He was a tool for our re-evaluation, our independence of subliminal unspoken thinking. Unspoken by some, thought by some even in the 21st Century - even in the NBA. Saturday night, the Los Angeles Clippers win in Game 7 against the Golden State Warriors was a victory, icing for the Clippers ~ but one in many comeuppance that Donald Sterling will see coming his way ~ life is funny that way. We will sit back and smile, as life always has it's way of unfolding.
Shelly Sterling, Sterling's wife sent a letter, and spoke to Commissioner Adam Silver of the NBA, and that she was in agreement that a new Chief Executive Officer should be found, a fine of $2.5 million against her husband Donald Sterling, and that Donald Sterling should be banned, all this after his racist remarks.
The Clippers win on Saturday was exhilarating, I happened to be at the Del Mar Marriott, it was packed and the crowd was cheering on, margaritas were flowing, and people were in thee pre-Cinco de Mayo mood. My thought went to the woman who cleaned my room, the man who was the gardener, the woman who came to my room when I first checked in and was so polite and asked - if everything was good ~ in English, she had a Spanish accent. Now you see, I am fourth generation Mexican American, and when I say someone spoke with a Spanish accent, I am even uncomfortable - because, I do not know if she is from Spain, Mexico, or ~ and I do not want her to take offense. I am proud of my ethnicity; I am Mexican, fourth generation - also German, fourth generation German American. Sometimes it's work at keeping ones side of the street clean and balanced it is the ~ terminology that is not easy. When someone is blatant someone is blatant, and when someone is aware they aware, and the dust needs to come out from the corners.
We are a country of many ethnicities. Donald Sterling will get his comeuppance, I am so glad for that. I am so glad that he brought this to the forefront, I am so glad that we have this opportunity to revisit the issue, a refresher course so to speak ~ sometimes that is needed. Sometimes the covers need a good shaking every once in awhile. Now ~ Cinco de Mayo, is the ~ Battle de Puebla in 1862. Mexico was going through a Civil war, had suspended all foreign debt payments. Spain, Britain, and French leader Napoleon III marched on Vera Cruz to Ovizaba. Spain and Britain sees the force that the French empire were to impose on Mexico they decided to negotiate and accept Mexico's terms. France went on fighting with thoughts of conquering and establishing another French empire. This Battle of Puebla invigorated the Mexican people, brought life, energy to them ~ something they needed.
Battle of Puebla, is a battle which Mexico won, defeated the French, it was not a war ~ it is not Mexican Independence Day, that is September 16. It invigorated the Mexican people, showed the world that Mexico was a force of power. In life we sometimes need on a daily basis to win our daily battles. No steps backwards in history, no missteps with words that we say ~ oops, no could of's, should's, or didn't mean to say that ~ can't unwind once something is said. We are a mix of people, personalities; we do not always choose the correct words, we do our best ~ so for today go out there have a wonderful ~ Cinco de Mayo Day, Battle of Puebla Victory Day ~ realize that we Americans live in the best country, a free country, and yes ~ I am feeling Patriotic. This Mexican, German American who accepts all cultures, and is free to celebrate all diversities will be celebrating today with home cooking ~ Mexican cooking, don't know quite yet what, but it will be tasty. Once again thank you for reading my Blog and ~ Best of Wishes ~ laura.
