Brewers Pick Long Beach State Pitcher Gagnon In Third Round

Gagnon is selected the 100th player overall in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

Long Beach State righthander Andrew Gagnon was selected in the third round of Major League Baseball’s Amateur Draft, by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 100th pick overall, the junior from Northridge, was the first from CSULB to be drafted this season. A former Big West Pitcher of the Week this season, Gagnon was a three-year starter for the Dirtbags.

For the second consecutive year, Gagnon was an All Big West Conference second team selection. He led the Dirtbags starters with a 2.81 earned-run average, holding opponents to a .225 batting average in 15 starts this season.

Last summer, Gagnon pitched for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League and was named as the Eastern Division starting pitcher for the Cape All-Star Game at Fenway Park. He led the league with five wins while posting a 2.10 ERA and 43 strikeouts.

As a sophomore, Gagnon was named second-team All Big West Conference in 2010 with a 3.28 earned-run average and led the team in victories.

Other Long Beach State draft picks now in Major League Baseball include the Angels Jered Weaver, Tampa Bay Rays Evan Longoria and Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.
