Constructed Greywater Wetlands for Habitat Creation and Landscape Re-use

Saturday, 12/5 10AM

Join us for an exciting talk with gardener and educator, Lydia Neilsen, outlining principles and best practices for the creation of do-it-yourself-scale greywater wetlands! Greywater wetlands are multifunctional, contained mini-ecosystems which mimic nature’s techniques for purifying water. A diverse array of microscopic organisms and water-loving plants consume soaps and nutrients and provide food and shelter for insects, birds and reptiles. These dynamic living systems receive already used water from your washing machine, bath, shower or sink and in turn produce clean water which can be stored in a tank or pond or directed to the landscape along with a beautiful, microclimate enhancing, pollinator attracting habitat in your yard. The principles are simple, the possibilities are endless! Let’s help our water participate as fully as possible, in as many places as possible before it leaves our landscapes.
