TRAFFIC HEADS UP: Overnight Closures of Hwy 4 In Antioch Area Begins Tonight

A stretch of the roadway will be closed this week in both directions.

Starting tonight, Caltrans and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority will close state Highway 4 in both directions in Antioch during overnight hours as crews work on a project to widen the freeway.

All lanes of Highway 4 will be shut down in both directions between the Hillcrest Avenue on- and off-ramps. Caltrans officials said the closures will last through Friday morning, with the westbound lanes set to close daily from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. and the eastbound lanes closing daily from 11:59 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Drivers will be directed to get off of the highway at the Hillcrest Avenue off-ramp and back on at the on-ramp, according to Caltrans.

The closure is part of a Highway 4 widening project that aims to widen the freeway from four lanes to eight between Loveridge Road and state Highway 160 in an effort to reduce congestion and create a safer roadway, according to Caltrans.

The project is receiving more than $540 million in state and federal funding and Contra Costa County Measure J tax revenue, Caltrans officials said.
