Today's riddle: What is the difference between a jeweler and a jailer? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Teen Arrested After Biting, Stabbing Father In Berkeley: Police (patch.com) — Berkeley police arrested a 17-year-old after he allegedly bit and stabbed his 53-year-old father at a home on the 1100 block of Sterling Avenue. Officers say the teen also struck his father with a broken metal broom before hiding inside the residence. The father was hospitalized with head and arm injuries, while the teen faces suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and related charges.
2. Did a Berkeley High yearbook photo violate civil rights law? (berkeleyside.org) — Berkeley High's 2026 yearbook is under civil-rights scrutiny after parents complained about a protest photo they say minimizes the Oct. 7 Hamas attack, while students and other families defend it as protected activism. As the investigation proceeds, BUSD has updated its free-speech policy, clarifying rules for political expression in student publications and limiting staff involvement in on-campus protests.
3. How Dolly Parton helped bring 27K free books to East Bay children (berkeleyside.org) — Berkeley families with children under 5 can get a free, personalized book mailed every month through the Berkeley Baby Book Project, which has already delivered nearly 27,000 books across Berkeley and nearby cities. Partnering with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, the Berkeley-based nonprofit especially supports bilingual households and low-income families, aiming to boost kindergarten readiness and early literacy throughout the East Bay.
4. Cal football GM Ron Rivera has one goal for 2026 season: 'Winning' (sfchronicle.com) — Cal football's new general manager Ron Rivera is pushing for a winning 2026 season and bigger crowds at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, even removing long-standing tarps to expand capacity. With a hyped sophomore quarterback, a new head coach, and marquee home games against UCLA, Clemson, and Stanford, Cal is banking on better results to re-energize local fans and donors.
5. Chapter 5 – Initial-Value Problems forOrdinary Differential Equations (berkeley.edu) — UC Berkeley math lecturer Per-Olof Persson shares detailed notes on initial-value problems for ordinary differential equations, including Lipschitz conditions, uniqueness theorems, and well-posedness. While highly technical, the material reflects ongoing instruction in a numerical analysis course at the Berkeley campus and may interest local students in STEM fields.
