Berkeley Police Subdue Suicidal Man

Police "hit the subject with multiple rounds from several less lethal launchers" to stop the armed man, who was advancing on officers.

BERKELEY, CA — Berkeley Police used non-lethal rounds to subdue a suicidal man who held a knife to his throat and threatened to commit suicide, according to police.

Officers responded to Roosevelt Street just north of Bancroft Way shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Crisis Intervention trained officers tried to negotiate with the individual for about 45 minutes. "During the negotiations the subject kept the knife to his throat while he repeatedly threatened to commit suicide by cop," police said in a statement.

When the man advanced on officers, they "hit the subject with multiple rounds from several less lethal launchers causing him to drop the knife and be safely taken into custody. He has been transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation."
