Crime-Ridden In-N-Out To Be Replaced By New Fast-Food Offering

Customers and workers were regularly targeted in car break-ins, armed robberies and other crimes before the location closed, reports said.

OAKLAND, CA — The site of a former In-N-Out in Oakland that was infamously plagued by crime may soon be home to a new restaurant, according to reports.

The 1-acre property on Hegenberger Road was purchased by Chandi Hospitality on March 20 for $1.8 million, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The new owner, which operates several restaurants in Northern California and India, intends to turn the site into a location for a new Curry Lane Kitchen, an Indian fast-food restaurant the group operates in Punjab, KRON reported, citing property records.

The Oakland In-N-Out was the first location the burger chain ever closed, according to KRON. Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick said the restaurant was “busy and profitable,” but customers and workers were regularly targeted in car break-ins, armed robberies and other crimes, the Chronicle reported.

Seven restaurants have shuttered in the area since 2022 — including In-N-Out, which closed in 2024, and two Starbucks locations — according to the Chronicle, which noted the city has increased the number of officers patrolling the area.
