Citing Berkeley leptospirosis outbreak, state bills broaden authority to dismantle abandoned vehicles (dailycal.org) — New California bills inspired by a deadly leptospirosis outbreak near Berkeley's 8th and Harrison encampment will give local authorities more power to immobilize and dismantle abandoned or illegally dumped vehicles. Authored by former Berkeley mayor Jesse Arreguín, the measures aim to reduce health hazards around encampments while preserving due process, and could significantly affect how Berkeley manages inoperable vehicles tied to homelessness.
   

2. Services, Shelter, and Housing for Unhoused People (berkeleyca.gov) — If you're unhoused or at risk in Berkeley, you can call 211 anytime or visit the North County Housing Resource Center on Telegraph Avenue for coordinated entry into local housing and support services. Staff assess your needs, connect you to eviction defense, benefits, medical care, and, for high-need residents, potential housing subsidies and navigation help within Alameda County's system.
   

3. CJS Successfully Completes Project on the Japanese Collection of the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum (berkeley.edu) — UC Berkeley's Hearst Museum has just wrapped a major project cataloging its extensive Japanese collection, uncovering rare porcelain, lacquerware and netsuke that illuminate Edo-period daily life. The findings will feed into campus classes, publications and outreach, and you can see highlights yourself at the Hearst Museum Gallery's Japanese exhibit, open Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. on campus.
   

4. NSF awards $37M to its UC Berkeley-led quantum computing research (dailycal.org) — UC Berkeley is leading a $37.5 million National Science Foundation effort to push the frontiers of quantum computing, with major research happening on campus and across California. Local physicists and engineers are working on new technologies, future undergraduate programs in quantum information science, and safeguards for post-quantum cryptography, positioning Berkeley as a key hub in this rapidly evolving field.
