Update: Two Earthquakes Rattle East Bay Friday Morning
Two back-to-back quakes – with preliminary magnitudes of 2.3 and 2.7 centered in Berkeley near the Claremont hotel – jostled the East Bay this morning at 9:25, according to the USGS. They follow a 2.3 temblor Wednesday night in the same area.
Update, Sept. 28, 11:40 p.m.: The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a third earthquake for Friday at the same location in Berkeley. The latest one was at 11:30 p.m. and had a preliminary magnitude of 1.4, smaller than the two that occurred 14 hours earlier.
Two earthquakes centered in Berkeley hit at 9:25 a.m. this morning, Friday.
They registered preliminary magnitudes of 2.3 and 2.7 and were centered about 1,000 feet southwest of the Claremont Resort along the Hayward Fault, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quakes come on the tail of a 2.3 magnitude shaker centered near the Claremont Resort Wednesday night.
The Hayward Fault runs along the East Bay hills from Fremont to San Pablo Bay and goes directly beneath the Cal football stadium. Its slip rate, estimated to be about 1/3-inch per year by 2003 Working Group for California Earthquake Probability, generates a number of local quakes. The fault is considered a prime candidate for a major quake.
