UC Berkeley Students: Resources For Re-Use, Recycling, Trash
Dumping at the curb has become a big problem in Berkeley at the end of every semester.
BERKELEY, CA — City officials are trying to stem what has become an annual ritual of University of California at Berkeley students moving out at the end of the semester and leaving unwanted furniture and other items at curbside.
An appeal is being made to tenants and landlords to properly discard of items no longer needed.
"Dumping mattresses and other items on the sidewalk doesn't lead to re-use," the city said in an advisory. "It creates a mess."
Tenants should use a building's trash bin. If those are full, properties with one to four units can schedule a free bulk waste pickup.

Another option is purchasing City of Berkeley prepaid trash bags that can be left at the curb for pickup by the city's City's Zero Waste Division.
Pre-paid bags, bulk waste pickup, or scheduling of a short-term Dumpster or extra pickup are available by calling 311 or (510) 981-2489.

Items left at curbside in garbage bags will not be collected. The city advises planning ahead. "Don't wait until the last minute and then throw everything in the garbage or our streets," it said in the advisory.
Items can also be taken directly to the city Transfer Station at 1201 Second St.
Recycle acceptable items and use sites such as Craigslist, Freecycle or Nextdoor to find takers for items that can legitimately be re-used.
To dispose of ewaste contact Berkeley-based nonprofit eWaste Collective, "which
picks up anything with a plug, working or not," the city advises.
Residents can report illegal dumping by calling 311.
