Video: Fire Crews Rescue Baby Bird Stuck In SF Storm Drain

The bird was reunited with its mother, authorities said.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A baby bird has a newfound lease on its early life after being rescued from a storm drain in San Francisco on Thursday morning.

It's unclear how the baby killdeer, a species found year-round in the United States, got stuck in the drain.

Fire crews responded to assist Animal Care & Control officials in getting the bird out, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

Video shows a firefighter deep in the debris-filled storm drain trying to get the bird out. After a short time, they got the baby bird out. The bird appears to remain calm throughout the entire endeavor, including as officers show it off in their hands.

The bird was reunited with its mother, who was flying nearby and calling it, authorities said.
