DMV Worker Took Daily 3-Hour Naps On Job For 4 Years: State Audit
Sleeping on the job may be to blame for long lines and wait times at the DMV.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – A California Department of Motor Vehicles employee failed to perform her essential job duties for nearly four years because she took long naps at her desk during work hours, according to a state audit. That could explain the long lines at the DMV.
The report said the employee misused more than 2,200 hours of work time as a result of her daily three-hour naps, costing the state more than $40,000, according to ABC7.
“We believe that the employee likely slept for at least three hours each day," the report said.

The employee was a key data operator, and her duties included "routine data entry for change of address and new vehicle ownership forms," according to the report.
She processed an average of 200 documents a day, when key data operators are expected to process more than 550, USA Today reported.

Supervisors failed to take disciplinary action against the employee, even though several co-workers complained about her behavior, according to New York Post. Officials thought the woman only missed 2o-3o minutes of work a day, despite having to wake the employee "three to four times each day," the report said.
Supervisors suspected a medical issue was the reason behind the frequent siestas, which made them "reluctant to take further steps to address the employee’s sleeping and poor production," USA Today reported.
The report was part of the California State Auditor's twice-a-year report on state worker misconduct.
