📰 News we're reading

1. Burbank School District Financials Still Concerning, County Says (outlooknewspapers.com) — Burbank families are being warned that the Burbank Unified School District still carries a “Lack of Going Concern” designation from Los Angeles County, signaling ongoing worries about deficit spending and weak internal financial controls. A county-assigned fiscal expert will continue working with district leaders as residents press for more transparency and public access to budget discussions.

2. Burbank School District Meeting Changes Draw Criticism (outlooknewspapers.com) — Burbank Unified families are raising concerns about recent changes to school board meetings, including moving all sessions to a smaller third-floor boardroom on Olive Avenue and shortening public comments from five to three minutes. Critics say the setup, poor video quality, and limits on board responses reduce transparency and access, while the superintendent argues the changes improve efficiency and avoid Brown Act issues.

3. LA Metro, Burbank locked in stalemate. But deal allows parts of rapid-bus project to move forward (pasadenastarnews.com) — Burbank’s fight with LA Metro over bus-only lanes on Olive Avenue is delaying part of the North Hollywood-to-Pasadena rapid bus project, even as construction continues elsewhere in the city. A court will decide whether Burbank can keep Olive as mixed-flow lanes, a ruling that could affect congestion, neighborhood traffic patterns, and future transit options for local commuters.

4. City of Burbank to Hold Autumn Arts Festival at Johnny Carson Park (myburbank.com) — Burbank residents are invited to a free Autumn Arts Festival at Johnny Carson Park on Saturday, September 19, featuring live music, local artist booths, and food trucks. Running from 4 to 7 p.m., the event showcases Burbank’s creative community, with hometown rock band The Velvonics headlining and plenty of family-friendly activities and parking options nearby.

5. Construction to Begin September 9 on Palm Paseo Beautification Project in Downtown Burbank (myburbank.com) — Downtown Burbank’s Palm Paseo will enter construction on Wednesday, September 9, bringing new landscaping, shade, seating, lighting, bike racks, and public art to the popular walkway. Work will run weekdays from 7 to 11 a.m., with businesses remaining open, construction pausing for the holidays, and completion expected in summer 2027.
