After 14 Years With Family, 'Ion' The Cat Is Surrendered To Peninsula Shelter: Adopter Sought

Animal shelter workers are hoping to find a loving home for the sweet feline to live out his twilight years. Is it YOU?

BURLINGAME, CA — The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) is seeking adopters for a 14-year-old cat named Ion so he can spend his twilight years in a new loving home.

Ion was first adopted as a kitten from PHS/SPCA in 2003, but his family has moved back to Slovenia and unfortunately was unable to take him with them. He was surrendered to PHS/SPCA this past April and is available for adoption again for a small adoption fee of $50.

“Ion is a very loving cat who starts purring the moment he sees someone,” said Buffy Martin Tarbox, PHS/SPCA Communication Manager. “Even though he’s fourteen years old, he doesn’t appear to have any significant medical issues and hopefully still has many years of love to give to a new family.”

His former family says he is extremely affectionate and easygoing. Ion is also a favorite among PHS/SPCA volunteers and staff who are all pulling for him to be adopted into a new home. “He’s one of those cats that charms everyone he meets, but he gets overlooked because of his age,” said Martin Tarbox.

Adopting an older cat has many benefits, including not having to “kitten proof” a home or go through the time-consuming process of raising a rambunctious kitten. A senior cat’s personality is already developed, so there won’t be any surprises about temperament. They also understand the concepts of approval and rewards so senior cats are more eager to please their owners.

“Ion would make a fantastic addition to a person or family seeking a mellow love bug cat,” according to Martin Tarbox. “Not only is he very sweet, he’s litter boxed trained, neutered and fully vaccinated.”

People interested in meeting Ion should visit the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA at 1450 Rollins Road in Burlingame, or call 650-340-7022.
