CEC announces 6 free 'Green Programs on Hot Topics'

The Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame (CEC) invites the public to six “Green Programs on Hot Topics” focused on current environmental issues during 2020. Admission is free. The programs are:

Tuesday, March 24 – Student Film Fest, 6-8 p.m., Burlingame High School Auditorium, 1 Mangini Way, Burlingame

Videos created by students in grades 4 through 12 who live or attend school in San Mateo County will be screened at CEC’s third annual film festival, and cash awards will be presented. More info at burlingamefilmfest.com. Cosponsored by the Burlingame Environmental Club at Burlingame High.

Tuesday, April 21 – Take a Bite Out of Climate Change, 7-8:30 p.m., Burlingame Public Library, 480 Primrose Road, Burlingame

A move away from meat and toward plant protein is often cited as the No. 1 step to counter the climate crisis. Learn about the Green Monday movement and how easy it is to change your diet with Debra Shapiro, a certified, plant-based nutrition coach. Free raffle and food samples.

Wednesday, May 6 – Who Stands to Gain from a Green New Deal?, 7-8:45 p.m., United Methodist Church, 1443 Howard Ave., Burlingame

Join community members as we discuss how environmental policy can equitably address climate change while sustaining diverse cultures. Includes group breakouts and sharing stories, with guidance from experts in environmental policy and justice on topics including climate action, carbon taxes and green jobs.

Saturday, June 6 – Family Workshop: Attracting Good Bugs to Your Garden, 10 a.m.-12 noon, Burlingame Public Library, 480 Primrose Road, Burlingame

Did you know that 90 percent of the bugs in our gardens are actually good bugs eating bad bugs? Horticulture specialist Suzanne Bontempo will discuss how to identify the bugs in your garden, how to keep the good ones around and which plants are good bug magnets. This is a fun program for the whole family. Suggested for ages 6 and older. Funded by the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency.

Wednesday, September 16 – ‘Paris to Pittsburgh’ Documentary, 7 to 9 p.m., Burlingame Public Library, 480 Primrose Road, Burlingame

In this inspiring 2018 film, when Trump pulls out of the Paris Accord, Americans decide not to wait for Washington to bail them out of climate change. They challenge action from their city leaders with real solutions. Join us in viewing this eye-opening movie that will empower us all to make a difference.

Sunday, October 18 – Electric Vehicle Workshop: Everything You Need to ‘Go EV,’ 2-4 p.m., St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 415 El Camino Real, Burlingame

Driving an electric vehicle is one of the single biggest actions you can take to fight climate change. Come and learn about the benefits: charging basics, rebates, the latest makes and models, and what’s in store for the future. Several owners will display their EVs and answer questions in the parking lot. Cosponsored by Acterra.
