Documentary shows majestic glaciers melting with time-lapse photography

Ancient mountains of ice disappear at alarming rates in the award-winning documentary “Chasing Ice,” which will be shown by the Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame on Wednesday, August 19, at 7 p.m. in the Lane Room of the Burlingame Public Library, 480 Primrose Road, Burlingame. Admission is free.

“Chasing Ice” tells the story of an environmental photographer, James Balog, who headed to the Arctic on a bold expedition for National Geographic to capture how glaciers were changing to tell the story of the Earth’s changing climate. Even though he had a scientific upbringing, Balog was a skeptic about climate change until his first trip north opened his eyes.

Putting his career and his life at risk, he committed himself to the challenge of capturing evidence of our changing planet. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture centuries-old towers of ice as they vanish.
