Man Accused of Gunfight with South San Francisco PD Charged with 5 Felonies

A man who allegedly started a gunfight with police in South San Francisco early on New Year’s Day was set for arraignment Monday afternoon on five felony charges, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Ivan DeJesus Gomez, 23, was charged Monday morning with two counts of attempted premeditated murder of a police officer, two counts of assault with a semi-automatic handgun on a police officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Wagstaffe said.

Gomez was scheduled to appear in court in Redwood City for arraignment at 1:30 p.m.

He is accused of firing at police officers who responded to reports of gunfire in the 600 block of First Lane shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday, according to South San Francisco police.

While searching the area on foot, the officers were fired on by a suspect hiding from them. The officers returned fire and the suspect ran toward Spruce Avenue.

Police searched for the suspect throughout the morning, drawing assistance from several neighboring law enforcement agencies, and found Gomez hiding near the shooting scene at about 10:30 a.m., police said.
