Surveillance Video Shows Vehicle Connected to Belmont Gold Chain Theft; Recognize It?

Last week a woman was walking home in Belmont when someone ripped a chain right off her neck. Now, police need help finding the suspect.

Belmont police released surveillance video Friday of the vehicle believed to be connected to a strong arm robbery of a woman in town last week.

The incident happened exactly a week ago, on Sept. 10, when a man ripped a gold chain right off a woman’s neck as she walked home in Belmont. Police said that the East Indian woman, in her 60s, was walking in the area of Mountain View Avenue and Yorkshire Way, when a car pulled up and a man got out and then grabbed the jewelry around her neck.

After the incident, police asked for anyone with surveillance cameras in the area to share footage they may have captured of the crime.

Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran said Friday that the agency now has some video they want to share with the public, in the hopes of identifying those involved.

“Investigators determined that security cameras at a local business on Old County Road, not only captured the suspect vehicle both prior to and after the crime, but the victim prior to the robbery as well,” Halleran said in a statement. “In the video, the victim is seen walking northbound on the east sidewalk of Old County Road and the suspect vehicle can be seen passing her several times, apparently casing her before the robbery. Later in the video, the SUV is seen traveling southbound on Old County Road at a high rate of speed, apparently fleeing the scene. The suspect vehicle appears to be a black Audi Q5 SUV.”
