Bicyclist, 31, Killed In Crash With Car Near Soquel

BREAKING: The Santa Cruz office of CHP is seeking anyone who possibly witnessed the Audi involved driving recklessly before accident.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA – A car fatally struck a bicyclist in unincorporated Soquel in Santa Cruz County on Wednesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at about 8:25 p.m. on Soquel Drive east of Rosedale Avenue.

An 18-year-old man from Soquel was driving a 2006 Audi A4 west on Soquel Drive in the far left lane when he struck the back of a Bianchi bicycle ridden by a 31-year-old man, CHP officials said.

The bicyclist, also a Soquel resident, was ejected from the bike and emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene about 15 minutes later.

His name was not immediately being released.

The Audi driver stopped at the scene and was not arrested, according to the CHP.

The collision remains under investigation and authorities do not know if drugs or alcohol were factors.

"This is not a hit and run, but we are looking for anybody that may have witnessed this vehicle driving recklessly prior to the collision," the CHP said. "The time frame would have been between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

"Area of travel would be Soquel San Jose Rd, Soquel Dr, Bay Porter, and nearby roads. Please call Santa Cruz CHP at 831-662-0511 if you witnessed this vehicle driving recklessly."
