Today's riddle: Why did the fish blush ? 🤔 (Answer below!)
• California beach swallowed by furious surf as Labor Day weekend crowds face parking nightmare (nypost.com) — Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad has lost most of its sand, and pounding surf has shut the state-run parking lot indefinitely, pushing Labor Day visitors onto Carlsbad Boulevard and nearby residential streets. With no repair timetable and unstable riprap, Carlsbad residents face tougher beach access, more neighborhood congestion, and uncertainty about how quickly state engineers can stabilize the shoreline.
• Secret codes, KGB interrogations, sheet music: This professor's new book is true Cold War thriller (newstribune.com) — Carlsbad resident and Cal State San Marcos music professor Merryl Goldberg has turned her real-life Cold War spying-by-sheet-music adventures into a new book, "Notes of Deception." She recounts how her klezmer band secretly encoded information to support Soviet refuseniks, endured KGB interrogations, and later helped bring their stories to U.S. audiences and lawmakers.
• Jones starts key rally against hometown team as Yankees beat Padres (trentonian.com) — A Yankees–Padres game in San Diego featured a local connection, as rookie Spencer Jones, who attended La Costa Canyon High in Carlsbad, sparked New York's key four-run rally with an RBI double. While the Padres slipped in the wild-card race, Carlsbad fans can note their hometown alum's growing impact on a playoff-bound Yankees squad.
