• California beach swallowed by furious surf as Labor Day weekend crowds face parking nightmare (nypost.com) — Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad has lost most of its sand, and pounding surf has shut the state-run parking lot indefinitely, pushing Labor Day visitors onto Carlsbad Boulevard and nearby residential streets. With no repair timetable and unstable riprap, Carlsbad residents face tougher beach access, more neighborhood congestion, and uncertainty about how quickly state engineers can stabilize the shoreline.

While the Padres slipped in the wild-card race, Carlsbad fans can note their hometown alum's growing impact on a playoff-bound Yankees squad.
