1. Carlsbad unveils new lighting in historic Barrio neighborhood (thecoastnews.com) — New pedestrian lighting is now up and running throughout Carlsbad's historic Barrio neighborhood, aiming to make evening walks feel safer and more inviting. Funded largely by a federal grant, the 115 warmer-hued lights are part of a broader Village and Barrio Master Plan, with traffic-calming changes also underway at key intersections like Pine Avenue and Harding Street.
2. 10 weeks free rent? Lackluster San Diego rental market has deals (sandiegouniontribune.com) — If you rent or own in Carlsbad, new data show North County's average rent is $2,583 a month, up 1.6% year over year with a 5.3% vacancy rate. Across San Diego County, heavy new construction and big move-in concessions are keeping effective rents nearly flat, giving Carlsbad renters more leverage and landlords more competition than in past years.
3. Report details San Onofre progress, hurdles to removing nuclear waste (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad is part of a regional coalition pressing federal officials to remove more than 1,600 tons of spent nuclear fuel still stored at the decommissioned San Onofre plant on the coast. A new report from Rep. Mike Levin outlines demolition progress, funding wins, and possible interim or permanent storage options, but offers no firm date for when waste near North County communities will finally be moved.
4. Vista City Council Appoints Amanda Guy as Acting City Attorney (northcountydailystar.com) — A former Carlsbad deputy city attorney, Amanda Guy, has been appointed acting city attorney for nearby Vista following Walter Chung's resignation. Her background in municipal and environmental law, including two years serving Carlsbad, means North County cities will likely continue coordinating closely on land use, CEQA, and public works issues that affect local residents.
