Carlsbad Construction Firm Receives $39.6M Contract

The contract with the Defense Department will support a new fitness center at Naval Base Coronado.

A construction firm in Carlsbad was Tuesday awarded a $39.6 million contract by the Defense Department to build a new fitness center at Naval Base Coronado.

The facility to be built by RQ Construction by March 2015 will include an outdoor swimming pool, gymnasium with basketball and volleyball courts, and exercise equipment. The pool will be used for survival training and recreation.

The contract was awarded by Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest, based in San Diego.

RQ Construction last month won a $31.8 million contract from the Pentagon to renovate heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at the Naval Medical Center.

RQ has built military housing at facilities in North Carolina and the Marine base at Twentynine Palms, two buildings at UC Santa Barbara, renovated and expanded Victorville's city hall and restored the historic courthouse in Riverside.
