📰 News we're reading

• Coast Guard Interdicts 18 People Off Carlsbad Coast (patch.com) — Residents in Carlsbad should know that the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a small panga-style boat about 20 miles off the local coast early Sunday morning. Eighteen people suspected of entering the country illegally were detained and later taken to Oceanside, where they were transferred to U.S. Border Patrol agents for processing.

• Energy from Hurricane Rachel could cause beach erosion in North County starting Wednesday (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad's Tamarack State Beach is expected to take another hit starting Wednesday as energy from Hurricane Rachel and very high tides combine to worsen erosion and shrink already sand-starved shoreline. Forecasters warn that several days of 3- to 5-foot surf, boosted by El Niño–warmed seas and 7-foot tides, could also disrupt rail service elsewhere along the coast.

• Developer pulls Carlsbad Village project over tenant concerns (thecoastnews.com) — A planned 33-unit mixed-use project in Carlsbad Village has been pulled after city staff warned the City Council that tenant protections under California's Housing Crisis Act hadn't been fully met. Developer Rincon Homes withdrew its application just before a scheduled hearing, saying it will reassess options while aiming to return with a proposal that adds affordable housing and supports small businesses in the Village.
