Plenty of parents and grandparents have stopped by the store since it opened. However, Garcia said day care providers also seem to make up a majority of customers.

"Having children, I know what a day in day care looks like," she said.

Providers often stock up on discounted clothing as "back up" in case of accidents.

Garcia said the Hayward Carter's was the chain's 345th store to open in California. Another is expected to open early next year in Emeryville.

"Their management staff is coming out of my store," said Garcia. "It's a lot of pressure, but I know I can make it work."
