CASTRO VALLEY, CA — There have been several high profile cold case arrests in the past year thanks to advanced DNA technology but it was simple, dogged police work that is credited in the arrest of a man in Utah wanted for a 2012 Castro Valley murder. In fact, Cody Tripp, who was using an assumed name police say, was included on the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Most Wanted List.

Tripp is awaiting extradition back to California. He is accused of killing 29-year-old Jordan Vigil, whose body was found in Tripp’s Castro Valley home on May 14, 2012.

After all of those years on the run, Tripp was arrested because of an alleged $3 purchase with a stolen credit card, according to the Ogden Standard Examiner.

Ogden Police Detective Rachel Walker was assigned to the case after the fraudulent purchase was made at a convenience store. She established that the victim believed his credit card was stolen by movers. Walker got paperwork on the men assigned to the move and suspected that an immigration card was fake. She followed the trail until it led to Tripp.

Walker, another detective and an agent with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) went to a Salt Lake City apartment on Wednesday and arrested Tripp.
