Coping with Cancer

Cancer, and treatment for cancer, can change your energy levels, appearance, sleep and more. Read about local classes designed to help!

Being diagnosed with cancer and receiving treatment takes a toll on a person’s body. Most people battling cancer report changes in their energy levels, appearance, sleep patterns, and mood. These changes may be symptoms of the cancer or they may be brought about from treatment – but they are so common that they deserve special attention and support.

When Cancer Changes Your Energy Levels

Fatigue is the most common side effect of cancer treatment, and it can make everyday activities – like talking on the phone or shopping for groceries – difficult. The fatigue that comes with cancer, called cancer-related fatigue, is different from normal tiredness because it persists and often doesn’t get better even after rest.

Cancer and cancer treatment can cause physical changes to the way people look and, as a result, feel about their bodies. In 1989 a doctor wanted to help a patient who wouldn't leave her hospital room because of her appearance after cancer treatment. He arranged for her to have a makeover which transformed not only the woman’s look, but also her outlook.

Today the American Cancer Society offers “Look Good, Feel Better” makeovers for women undergoing cancer treatment in every state. The free class providing women with make-up and skin tips (free make-up bag to participants) and nutrition and exercise tips. The next class in Castro Valley will be held on Monday, May 7th from 10am to 12pm at Eden Medical Center. Seating is limited so please call the American Cancer Society at 800-395-5665 to register.

Emotional Support Through the Illness

Most people face some degree of depression, anxiety, fear or distress when cancer becomes part of their lives. A support group offers a safe and supportive environment for people to ask questions and get emotional support to help them with their cancer journey. Studies have even shown that cancer support groups can enhance participants’ self-esteem and help reduce anxiety, depression, fatigue and stress.

Eden Medical Center hosts a cancer support group every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month from 6-8:00pm. No registration required but those with questions are welcome to call (925) 933-0107.
