Undefeated Creekside Girls Basketball Wins Championship; Canyon Takes Second with a Strong 7-1 Season

Creekside's sixth-grade girls basketball team capped an unbeaten season Saturday with a 14-8 victory over rival Canyon in the championship game of the Hayward Area Recreation Department league.

Ziyah Starks single-handedly outscored Canyon with 10 points to lead the Wildcats to the title. Emily Shaw and Sarah Nosseir also had baskets for Creekside, which was coached by Melvin Parker and Rich Dwinell.

Others who contributed to the 9-0 season were Kaela Dwinell, Margeaux Jackson, Aisley Njissang, Angelina Parker, Maggie Del Grande, Christina Maldonado and Allie Curtis.

Creekside had beaten Canyon 16-9 on Feb. 12 as part of its 8-0 regular season. Canyon finished in second place at 7-1, earning a rematch in the championship game.

Creekside outscored its competition 266-44 over the course of the season.

Sophia Davis and Gabbie Dionisio had two baskets apiece to account for Canyon's scoring in the title game.
