CVSan: Custodian Recognition Event

School custodians go out of their way to help reduce waste. Schools in Castro Valley have high recycling and composting, or “diversion,” rates, averaging 90%, in large part due to the efforts of custodians. Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) honored school custodians at the 15^th Annual CVSan Custodian Recognition Luncheon at Canyon Middle School on Thursday, June 11, 2026. All Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) and private school custodians and administrators were invited.

Gift cards were given to all custodial staff in attendance, and individual awards and gift certificates were presented to the following custodians:

·The Dan Curry Program of the Year Award: Canyon Middle School Day Crew, comprising Mario Baker, Xiaodong Liu, Joseph Gomez, and George Hughes.

·The Green Ribbon Partner Award: Stafont Smith, Vannoy Elementary School.

·The Good Green Attitude Award: Franco Giron, Castro Valley Elementary School.

More than 40 people were in attendance, including CVUSD custodians and maintenance staff, CVSan staff, and CVSan Board President Ralph Johnson and Board Members Timothy McGowan, Dave Sadoff, and Kristy (Dooman) Woerz.
