In 2007, CVSan launched the Green Ribbon Schools Program to guide schools toward sustainable waste reduction practices. This year, schools were required to complete a minimum of 40 activities, such as providing recycling and organics containers in all classrooms and assigning lunchtime monitors to help students sort waste correctly into recycling, organics, and garbage. Each school achieved a minimum 90% waste diversion rate.
Awards were based on a $900 flat rate, with additional funding based on school size. Extra credit was awarded for completing additional activities and demonstrating excellence in waste diversion.
