CVSan Wins Award for Multi-Family Recycling and Organics Programs

Castro Valley Sanitary District’s (CVSan) Multi-Family Recycling and Organics Program was selected by the Green California Summit Advisory Board for a Green California Summit Leadership Award in the category of Waste Management. The Green California Leadership Awards recognize outstanding environmental achievements by California government and highlight successful public sector projects implemented in the state.

CVSan has been working steadily on diverting waste from the landfill in the multi-family sector since 2006, when outreach was conducted to promote single-stream recycling programs. Since 2012, outreach efforts to start food scrap recycling at multi-family complexes have resulted in 129 food scrap recycling programs to date. Diversion based on service levels in the multi-family sector has increased from 18% in 2005 to 56% in 2016.

Solid Waste Supervisor, Naomi Lue, and Solid Waste Specialist, Michelle Wu, accepted the awards on behalf of CVSan at the Green California Summit and Exposition on April 21, 2016 in Sacramento.
