Despite efforts to save their lives, they both died, police said.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. It's unclear who had the right of way or whether drugs or alcohol on behalf of the driver were factors in the crash.
Mariscal's family said in a fundraiser created to help pay for funeral costs that they've been left without answers following her sudden death.
"The Newark Police Department is still investigating the circumstances, and we are left navigating this unimaginable loss without closure," her family said in a GoFundMe post. "Lina’s absence is felt deeply by everyone who knew her, and we are doing our best to honor her memory while facing the challenges ahead."
The fundraiser has raised $7,575 out of its $8,000 goal as of Thursday morning.
