Suitcase Stuffed With $1 Million, 300+ Pounds Of Pot Recovered: Deputies

BREAKING: The investigation began when the CHP tried pulling over a van in Castro Valley for a cell phone violation.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA – Authorities in Alameda County arrested two people Saturday, and a search recovered hundreds of pounds of marijuana and $1 million in cash, sheriff's officials announced Monday.

According to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, a California Highway Patrol officer attempted to pull over a van on Interstate Highway 580 in the unincorporated community of Castro Valley for a cellphone violation.
During the stop, a sedan cut off the CHP vehicle to create a distraction so the van could get away. Both suspect vehicles tried to flee but were apprehended in Castro Valley, sheriff's officials said.

Officers searched the van and found 200 pounds of marijuana and an additional eight pounds of marijuana inside the sedan.

Two suspects were arrested for the sale and transportation of narcotics, sheriff's officials said.

During a follow-up search, detectives learned that the suspects were connected to a group of storage units in the city of Alameda.

Members of the county Narcotics Task Force and a sheriff's K-9 unit searched the storage units and found more than 100 pounds of processed marijuana and marijuana growing equipment. They also found a suitcase filled with $1 million cash, sheriff's officials said.

The case is currently under investigation.
