Sutter’s Eden Medical Center Awarded 4 Stars for Hospital Quality

Sutter’s Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley was recently awarded four stars for overall quality — the second highest designation available for hospitals from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Created to give consumers a summary of hospital performance, the CMS overall hospital star ratings can be considered the gold standard for measuring health care quality and safety.

The CMS star rating is based on hospital performance across five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care.

Exceptional Care, Exceptionally Close

In addition to its high CMS rating, Eden has also been recognized for exceptional patient safety, critical care and community health.

• Patient Safety: Awarded Healthgrades’ Patient Safety Excellence recognition for having the lowest occurrences of 14 preventable patient safety events, putting Eden among the top 10% in the nation for patient safety.
  
  
• Maternity Care: Received a quality award from the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative for demonstrating a commitment to excellence in maternity care, was recognized by US News & World Report as high performing in maternity care and has earned the Birthing-Friendly designation from CMS. Eden has also earned a place on the Maternity Care Honor Roll for eight consecutive years and been named a center of distinction in maternity care from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
  
  
• Joint Care: Named a center of distinction in knee and hip replacement from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and was recognized by US News & World Report as high performing in hip fracture.
  
  
• Diabetes: Recognized by US News & World Report as high performing in diabetes. The high performing accolade is US News’ highest possible rating for procedures and conditions and is earned by only a small minority of hospitals.
  
  
• Stroke Care: Recently recognized by the American Heart and Stroke Association for high quality stroke care. Eden earned a Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for stroke care and was listed on the stroke Honor Roll at the Elite Plus level – both accolades represent the highest recognition possible for these honors. Additionally, Eden was named on the stroke Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll which promotes evidence-based stroke care for patients with diabetes. Eden was also recognized by US News & World Report as high performing in stroke care. • Inclusivity: Earned a LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader award from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the educational arm of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization. This year marks the sixth time that Eden has received the maximum score of 100 and earned the Leader designation.

• Critical Care: Named among America’s 100 Best for Hospitals for critical care. This is Healthgrades’ highest distinction in critical care and translates to Eden being among the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for this type of care.
  
  
• Community Health: Recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review for its role in the health of the broad community by providing accessible primary care, emergency services, continuity of care, specialized services, healthcare access for underserved populations, economic benefits and support for disaster response and public health preparedness. One of only 11 California hospitals to make the list, Eden was lauded for its ability to stay current and expand to meet the community’s healthcare needs.
