Lunger, a 15-year veteran of the Hayward Police Department, was shot near Myrtle and Lion streets at about 3:15 a.m. on July 22 after he and another officer stopped a Chevrolet Silverado truck that was allegedly driving erratically, police said.

Mark Estrada, 21, was allegedly the truck’s driver and is accused of shooting Lunger without warning during the traffic stop. Another officer returned fire at the truck. Estrada later showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds and was eventually arrested and charged with killing Lunger.
