What Should Be Done With Unused Land Set Aside For Bypass?

The land was supposed to be a freeway bypass but it was never used.

HAYWARD, CA — The city of Hayward will hold a community meeting on Thursday to discuss the development potential of nearly 100 acres of city-owned property through the hills above Foothill and Mission boulevards that originally was earmarked for a state Highway 238 bypass.

City staff and consultants will provide an overview of the property, which previously was owned by Caltrans, and some initial planning ideas for parcels that remain available for development.

Hayward officials said the meeting will provide an opportunity for the community to provide feedback on what new development of these properties should look like and what public amenities and benefits should be included and prioritized.

The meeting will be held at the Matt Jimenez Community Center at 28200 Ruus Road in Hayward from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

Language translation and childcare services will be provided and advanced registration isn't required.

Hayward officials said they will use the feedback they receive at the meeting to prepare a more detailed draft master site plan for each parcel.

Those plans will be presented and discussed at a second community meeting early next year.
