Woman Killed Sunday in Castro Valley Fire Identified

BREAKING: Black smoke was billowing from the townhouse when firefighters arrived.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — A woman killed in a two-alarm fire at a Castro Valley condominium on Sunday morning was identified as 51-year-old Jacqueline Burns, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

The fire was reported at 6:16 a.m. at a townhouse in the 2000 block of San Miguel Avenue.

The home was only about 150 feet away from an Alameda County Fire Department station, but by the time firefighters arrived, black smoke was billowing from the second floor, fire officials said.

Crews got inside and had the fire knocked down within about 15 minutes, containing it to the single townhouse.

Most of the fire damage was on the second floor, where Burns was found unresponsive in the bathroom. Firefighters tried to resuscitate Burns but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second townhouse nearby was evacuated but not damaged.
